Baljinder Bharaj

Leeds based surface pattern designer

“I am a highly intuitive, versatile and innovative designer based in Leeds, West Yorkshire.

My work is very personal to me. Initially, I create handmade/hand drawn structures, patterns and textures using a range of innovative mixed media that I feel will best create the effect and aesthetic I want. The next stage in the development of any of my work largely consists of me experimenting with techniques and processes. I hugely enjoy the experimental stage of my work, as it allows me to be more expressive, and be free without thinking so much of the final outcome. I use shapes, structures and textures which are sometimes manipulated, overlapped, cut, and repeated. I like to think that my work takes on an unconventional way of working that allows creativity to be seen a new light. Personal influences for my work stem from subjects such as emotion, my cultural identity (British/Indian) and own gender (female).”
